AS I'M DELVING INTO TEXTILE HISTORY...
We aren't cutting everything we buy. In fact, I'm quietly setting some pieces aside for another project that's just as important to me as this business.
The back of this lace wasn't salvageable, but as I carefully snipped away, I found myself completely captivated by the intricacy and craftsmanship of the design.
There are so many talented makers giving antique and vintage textiles a new life, and as a maker myself, I'm grateful to see that movement growing. But before I ever decide to cut a textile, I do my research—not through Google, but through resource books, textile historians, and mentors who have dedicated their lives to this field.
Every piece deserves to be understood before it's transformed. Some textiles carry historical significance that no amount of money could ever replace, and those deserve to be preserved.
Research takes time. It requires patience, and as makers, patience isn't always easy. But whenever someone says, "You shouldn't cut that," I want them to know I've done everything I know to do before making that decision. I believe we have a responsibility not only to create beautiful things, but also to preserve the history we're fortunate enough to hold in our hands.
